The basic tensions in Arlander’s exhibition concern time and space. The artworks in the first room have been video filmed on the island of Harakka in Helsinki. The works in the second room are made all over the world, like Cape Verde and Copenhagen.
In her works Arlander attempts to perform landscape. The performance or the human figure and the repetition which emphasises temporality increase the meaning of the chosen images. The videos and the still pictures invite the viewer to rest in front of them. An illusion of stillness or of flowing movement is produced. Time passes slowly or in selected moments. This gives strength and peace simultaneously.
Annette Arlander (b.1956) works as a visual artist and also as Professor of Performance Art and Theory at the Theatre Academy, Helsinki. In 1980`s she was active in the performance art group Homo $. Arlander is member of artists’ association MUU and AV-archive. ![]() |
